3-Day Sundarbans Tour Itinerary | Take A Boat Travel Journal

The promise of the Sundarbans is a siren call for any adventurer. But what does a typical tour actually feel like? As a travel journalist, I joined a classic 2-night, 3-day journey with Take A Boat to document the experience from start to finish. This isn't just a schedule; it's the story of an immersion into the world's largest mangrove forest.

Day 1: The Departure and First Glimpse of the Wild

The adventure begins not on the water, but on the road. After an early morning arrival in Khulna via bus or train, a Take A Boat representative meets us for the short transfer to the port. The air is already thick with anticipation and the salty tang of the river.

By mid-morning, we are stepping aboard our home for the next three days. The Take A Boat vessel is sturdy and comfortable, with a shaded upper deck that offers panoramic views and a cozy cabin below to stow our gear. After a welcome drink and a thorough safety briefing, we cast off. The urban landscape of Khulna slowly recedes, replaced by ever-widening rivers and the first glimpses of mangrove trees.

The afternoon is spent acclimating to the rhythm of the water. We glide past local fishing boats and small riverside villages, life unfolding at the water's edge. Our first official stop is the Karamjal Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, we take a guided walk on a raised wooden walkway, getting our first close look at the mangrove ecosystem and spotting captive Saltwater Crocodiles and Spotted Deer. It’s a gentle introduction.

As the sun begins its descent, we anchor in a quiet canal. The sunset over the Sundarbans is a spectacle of fiery oranges and deep purples, reflected perfectly in the still water. Dinner is served on board—a delicious spread of fresh, local Bangladeshi cuisine. Under a blanket of stars, with only the sounds of the forest around us, the magic of the Sundarbans truly begins to sink in.

Day 2: Deep into the Heart of the Mangrove

Dawn breaks with a chorus of bird calls. Before breakfast, we embark on a small country boat for a silent, morning bird-watching excursion. This is when the forest is most alive. Kingfishers dart like blue lightning, and the trees are alive with the songs of myriad species. Our Take A Boat guide points them out, his trained eye spotting what ours would miss.

After a hearty breakfast, the main engine starts, and we journey deeper into the forest's core, heading towards the Kotka-Kochikhali area. The channels narrow, and the forest closes in around us, a towering wall of green. This is prime tiger territory, and everyone is on high alert, scanning the muddy banks for any sign of the big cat.

We moor and take a thrilling walk through the forest to the Kotka Beach, a vast, empty stretch of shell-strewn sand. The walk is exhilarating, a true feeling of being in the wild. After lunch on the boat, we visit a forest watchtower. Climbing to the top offers a breathtaking canopy-level view of the endless mangroves stretching to the horizon.

The late afternoon is for another silent boat safari through narrow creeks, where the water is so still it acts as a mirror. We are lucky enough to spot a curious Irrawaddy dolphin surface and see a massive Water Monitor Lizard climb onto a bank. We return to our mothership for another spectacular evening, sharing stories of the day's sightings.

Day 3: The Return Journey and Farewell

Our final morning is a peaceful one. We enjoy a last breakfast on the deck, soaking in the serene atmosphere. We take one last village walk on a small island, seeing the resilient local way of life that exists in harmony with the forest.

Slowly, we begin our journey back towards Khulna. The journey back is quiet, everyone lost in their own reflections, trying to imprint the memory of the forest's sights and sounds permanently in their minds. We exchange contact information with new friends, all bonded by this shared experience.

By early afternoon, we dock back at the Khulna port. As we disembark from the Take A Boat vessel, there’s a shared feeling of having experienced something profound. The Sundarbans isn't just a place you visit; it's a feeling you carry with you.
