Sundarban Packing List 2025: Season-by-Season Guide

Don't overpack! Use our expert, season-by-season Sundarban packing list for 2024. Includes clothing, essential gear, health items, and what to leave behind.

An expedition to the Sundarbans is not a typical beach holiday. The right gear is the difference between a comfortable adventure and a challenging ordeal. As an expedition guide for Take A Boat, I have seen what works and what doesn't. This is not a suggestion list; it is a field-tested system for packing. We have broken it down by category and season to ensure you are perfectly prepared for the unique conditions of the mangrove forest.

The Core Clothing List (All Seasons)

The principles for clothing are universal: protection from the sun and insects, and comfort in a humid environment.

  • Tops: 3–4 lightweight, long-sleeved cotton or quick-dry shirts. Long sleeves are mandatory for sun and insect protection.

  • Bottoms: 2–3 pairs of quick-dry trousers or comfortable cargo pants. Avoid denim—it is heavy and slow to dry.

  • Colors: Opt for earthy, neutral colors like olive green, khaki, beige, or light brown. Avoid bright colors and, crucially, blue and black, which are known to attract tsetse flies.

  • Headwear: A wide-brimmed hat or a sturdy cap with a neck flap is non-negotiable.

  • Socks & Underwear: Quick-dry and moisture-wicking materials are best.

Seasonal Clothing Adjustments

Winter (Oct–Feb)

  • Light fleece jacket, a warm hoodie, and a windbreaker for cool mornings and evenings on the boat deck.

Summer (Mar–May) & Monsoon (Jun–Sept)

  • Quick-dry fabrics are essential.

  • A high-quality, lightweight rain jacket or poncho.

  • For summer, bring extra sets of breathable clothing.

Footwear: The Foundation of Comfort

  • Primary Shoes: Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles (trail runners or hiking sandals with a closed toe).

  • Sandals: Sturdy, waterproof sandals (like Chacos or Keens) for muddy landings and wearing on the boat.

  • Do Not Bring: Heavy hiking boots or open-toed flip-flops.

Essential Gear & Electronics

  • Binoculars: Critical for wildlife viewing (Take A Boat provides a few, but better to bring your own).

  • Camera & Lenses: Telephoto lens (200mm+), extra memory cards, and batteries.

  • Power Bank: A must due to limited charging times on the boat.

  • Headlamp/Flashlight: With fresh batteries for moving around at night.

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Better for the environment; we provide mineral water.

  • Dry Bags: Protect electronics and documents from humidity and sudden rain.

Health & Personal Items

  • Personal Medication: Bring more than you think you'll need, in original containers.

  • First-Aid Kit: Plasters, antiseptic wipes, anti-diarrheal tablets, pain relievers.

  • Sunscreen: High SPF, water-resistant.

  • Insect Repellent: Strong formula with DEET.

  • Lip Balm: With SPF protection.

  • Hand Sanitizer: Use frequently.

  • Motion Sickness Pills: Helpful for unpredictable tidal currents.

Crucial Documents

  • Original NID Card or Passport: Mandatory for forest department permit (photocopies not accepted).

  • Cash: For personal expenses, souvenirs, and tips for the crew.

What You Can Leave Behind

To ease your load, remember that Take A Boat provides:

  • All safety equipment (life jackets).

  • All meals, snacks, and drinking water.

  • Towels and bedding on board.

Packing for the Sundarbans is about being smart, not heavy. Every item should have a clear purpose. Following this list ensures comfort, preparation, and the freedom to fully enjoy the incredible experience ahead.
